What it’s (basically) all about: Vash the Stampede is back. This is the remastered Geneon edition of the original Trigun. All of the same episodes are here, with new special features and more episodes per disk. (See Trigun review for complete details on the older version.)
Nitty Gritty: The special features include clean opening animation, DVD credits, 26 character line designs, an English opening (regular opening with English credits), Geneon previews for Gankutsou: Count of Monte Cristo (an anime retelling of the classic story), Gun Sword, and Starship Operators. All the previews are teen- viewing acceptable.
Vash is, again, an interesting character. He tries very hard to stay out of trouble, yet he seems to walking into it. A lot. And, like in the original release, there is a lot of gunplay in the series. A lot. People get shot, buildings blow up, and Vash is often running for his life while trying not to take anyone else’s. At one point an entire town is trying to catch him, yet somehow he escapes unscathed. There is also smoking, drinking, and the occasional appearance of a nudie magazine (though it has little detail.)
The language is the same as in the original, as well. Four letter words are used pretty frequently, but nothing harder than sh*t is used. Other favorite words include dumba$$, hell, damn, and bastard. These words are often used in both the subbed and dubbed versions.
Survey says: Teens aren’t going to have a problem watching this, but parents will likely have a problem with their teens watching it. Because of the language and the violence (yea though Vash tries to never shoot anyone) this is better off being housed with your adult collections.
Personal Ad: This transfer is a lot clearer and crisper than the original. It’s also got more episodes a disk, which means the entire series (which comes out one disk a month through January 2007) will be fewer disks (6 total.) I’m a big fan of Trigun, and I’m buying this version of it for my own personal collection.
