What it’s (basically) all about: Ryo has been having nightmares about demons. Lots of them. So many in fact that it’s starting to effect his life. In an effort to get him back on track his father buys him a motorcycle. When Ryo gets in an accident he starts to see images from the future that are disturbing and real. It turns out there is far more going on here than just nightmares. What do the devils want with him? Why is his father doing strange brain experiments? What role is Ryo to play in the prophecies of God and Demon Lord Dante?

Nitty Gritty:

There is a lot of stylized nudity in the opening/ closing credits (male and female), and throughout the show, especially during the sacrifice scenes. (Yes, I did say sacrifice. As in human.)  There are some fairly gory scenes with demons eating people and ripping their hearts out on screen. There’s more nudity here, too. Ryo’s sister Saori is a fan service dream with strange feelings for her brother.

Ryo gets in a motorcycle accident about ten minutes after he gets it, but he is wearing his helmet if that counts for anything.

Considering the amount of violence and nudity involved, the language is surprising mild. Shit (sub/dub) and hell (sub/ dub) are the two strongest words used, and are only used a couple of times.

Special features include highlights from episodes 3 and 4 (in Japanese), highlights form episodes 5 and 6 (in Japanese), character profiles, a press conference clip (subtitled), the US trailer, clean open/closing animation, DVD credits, and Geneon previews for Texhnolyze, Gad Guard and R.O.D. The TV.

Survey says: Appropriate for adult collections. There’s too much gore and nudity for this series to be placed anywhere else.

Personal Ad: Not my cup of tea, as they say. Animation was okay, and the voice work wasn’t anything to write home about. (Spoiler alert! Highlight the following two sentences to see the text if you don’t mind knowing what happens.)  Ryo gets eaten by Demon Lord Dante and becomes Demon Lord Dante. What’s the deal with that? Considering that Geneon is pretty much out of the anime business now, I wouldn’t fall all over myself to get my hands on this for my own collection.
